Every Step of the Way

You flew into my life one takeoff at a time, and after one snowball fight, and many meals later,

You promised to walk with me every step of the way.

You took to my family and claimed them as yours; we made our own family and a home with our three wonderful, smart children,

We have been with them all every step of the way.

When I faltered you were there to catch me; you always kept me straight and level, the ball centered, the trim set just right,

You protected me every step of the way.

Cancer crashed in, you fought hard and long, being strong and positive, living each day, looking forward to the next,

I promised to be beside you every step of the way.

You loved your granddaughter with all of your heart, pinching her cheeks and watching Daffy Duck until that night God took you away,

You held her tightly every step of the way.

The next day the door opened, the wind blew you in, one last look, one last assurance, and as the door closed behind you,

We knew God would care for us all every step of the way.

A year has passed since God took you home, my heart still aches, my tears still fall,

And I have loved you every step of the way.

Many say kind words, but don’t really know what the sadness feels like that hits any time of the day or night, taking me by surprise,

Belief has carried me every step of the way.

I lost half of myself, feeling lonely yet not alone, you are everywhere but I can’t touch you,

I will carry your memories every step of the way.

I need to find my place; where do I belong, who am I without you? So as I walk the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine,

I know that God will carry me every step of the way.

You said you’d go with me one day if I went at your pace, that time has now come and I hope to find some peace as I make my way north,

I will carry you with me every step of the way.

When I walk my last steps up Mt. Katahdin I’ll know who I am supposed to be because your love, your words, your thoughts, and dreams will always be with me. I will release you to the west wind, letting you fly, knowing that

You will always be a part of me every step of the way.
